Background to This City is a Body
You know I thought if people were just nicer to each other things would be better. It's not rocket science. But actually it is rocket science, it's really, really hard...
Over 4 years, 50 very different people from the same city worked on The Migrant Project: CuriousWorks' first creative initiative. Monologues, arguments, short films, songs, interviews, costumes, agreements, music, dance, speeches and more were made. The interactions within the group were a microcosm of a city itself.
The action was documented on video by many different people, on many different cameras. The resulting edit, unfolding an invisible, bird's eye view of the project, is the film This City is a Body.So you're saying to be part of the West is to just opt out of culture?
It is a portrait of Sydney, Australia, from the ground up. An examination of a place built on a history of migration: against a backdrop of four years in Australia's history when a race riot, desperate refugees and citizenship tests seemed to dominate the political agenda.
To keep clutching at a bastard culture for the brothers and strangers and racists that may threaten you. The racist is you. Like the rest of your kin. The adopted brothers and sisters in this fight to fit in.
This film is for anyone who has wondered about mapping more than a city's streets. Anyone who has realised: I can only belong here, by taking it away from someone else. This City is a Body doesn't provide any answers, but it does depict the extraordinary journey of one motley group really trying to – and bringing you along with them, whether you like it or not.
I am looking at you, getting a sense of us, going out into the ocean, and that is extremely powerful, extremely hopeful, it is an incredible statement that you’re making and that you’re bringing us in that journey… and you’re open, see here you are, you’re absolutely open, everything you see, everything you’ve done, even to this forum, even the way that you stand, in front of us, is all about hope and courage and vision.
